Medieval stone above the Semois gorge

Medieval stone above the Semois gorge

"The castle appears around a tight bend — stone walls, river below, no warning."

Overview

The N95 drops through tree-tunnelled sweepers toward the Semois valley, the castle walls of Bouillon appearing on the ridge before a tight bend brings you down to river level. Château de Bouillon, built by Godfrey of Bouillon before the First Crusade, is worth the steep climb for the ramparts view alone, and the riverside cafés below pour good Belgian beer.

Highlights

  • Tree-tunnelled sweepers on the N95 into the Semois valley
  • Crusader-era Château de Bouillon on the ridge
  • Riverside cafés and Belgian beer on the quai
